Our ‘island solitude’ fragrance was originally launched in spring 2014 as an homage to the Scandinavian pastime of peaceful island hopping that we both love (Gerry has a summer house in the Stockholm archipelago, while Shaun used to keep a boat on the vast Lake Mälaren).
The fragrance was initially named using the Swedish word for island – Ö – and formed part of the tidal wave of Skandinavisk home fragrances in our second season which also included other emerging regulars, RO and KOTO, plus the rather less celebrated SOMMAR and KØBENHAVN.
Oh, how little we knew back then.
Later, when we reformulated the fragrance to work for the skin via our inaugural body care collection, we also decided to update the name. Though, to be honest, it wasn’t just because of its skin evolution, it was also because most people didn’t even realise that Ö was actually a word. Not surprising really, when Ö really just looks rather like a surprised face emoji.
So we changed the name to the Norwegian translation – ØY. The result? Most people now just pronounce it much like the primal English shout for attention, ‘Oi!‘.
But one thing never changed, and that was the ‘island solitude’ truth that forms the template for the unique marine floral fragrance profile that plays such an important role in our collection of Scandinavian stories.
So, when we decided last year to once again refresh the fragrance, this time into pure Eau de Toilette form, we went all the way back to 2014 and its place in our history as the fourth fragrance from Skandinavisk.
Hence Kapitel 4, or chapter four.
You could argue this iterative process has been as meandering as the boats we both sailed through Scandinavian waters.
Either way, we love island solitude, and we encourage you to experience it too.
