Hardangerfjord & Bergen, Norway.

As part of our ongoing commitment to discover and bring to life the scents of Scandinavia, last week we headed to Norway to spend time at Hardangerfjord and its famous fruit orchards for the blossom season, and to Bergen, Norway’s second city. Our usual explorers of Shaun, our founder, and Stéphane, our perfumer, were this time joined by Niki Brantmark, My Scandinavian Home to help document the visit.

With just 2.2% of arable land Norway is not famous for its produce, but fjordland provides some of the most fertile soil in Scandinavia and the micro-climate at the water’s edge minimises the risk of frost, delivers longer sunny summer days, and creates an ideal environment for distinctive-tasting fruits including apple, pear, cherry and plum, as well as countless berries. It is the world’s most northerly location for growing fruit.

Our starting point for our tour was a reminder of our popular FJORD fragrance, a scent designed to reflect the coniferous forests, crashing waterfalls and all those abundant fruits that together magnify the drama of fjordland. The fragrance combines notes of woods and ripening fruit orchards, wild berries, blackcurrants and raspberry flowers.

We also took time to visit Bergen, the gateway to the fjords, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and famously rainy. Just time to explore the old wooden houses and the harbour – and the delicious scent of rainwater.

Discoveries from each tour serve three purposes: to inspire new fragrance ideas; to better inform the creation of fragrance prototypes; and to refine existing scents. Learn more about our process of creation here.
