The Story Behind Our Design
Line Krüger. Creative Director, Skandinavisk
Let me share with you the secret to our design. We have always been inspired by the Scandinavian design tradition – of function over form, of minimal aesthetics and understatement, and of responsible sourcing and production practises. You can see this most recently reflected in our choice of elements and materials for the Next Generation collection, of their simple, clean lines, and their origin and footprint.
We then work very much with graphic design to wrap each item and bring its fragrance story to life. The graphic design considers colour, texts and symbols in one unified identity.
‘Because nature is such a big part
of the Scandinavian story,
we have worked with colours uncommon
in traditional Scandinavian design aesthetics.’
We call our fragrances ‘chapters’, and each chapter has its own graphic symbol, many of which can be found inside our pattern motif:
The evergreen forests
The maritime history
The long summer days
The cold winters
The cosiness
The love
The Nordic flags
The unusual letters in the Scandinavian alphabets
In essence, our pattern motif tells the story of Scandinavia and each symbol represents one of those chapters.
‘It was also important to us that we celebrated words from the Nordic languages, words that mean something to people here, but the rest of the world has literally no connection to, and almost certainly can’t pronounce.’
‘Last but not least, our pattern motif was consciously designed like a watermark, to help identify each of our products, and to reflect the wider story of Scandinavia.’
